About the Author

Let me introduce myself. I am a San Francisco trial attorney, a realtor, a musician, a summer camp director, and a cancer survivor. I am also a husband, and the father of two sons and two daughters.

The best part of my life has been the past 40 years working with hundreds of teenagers and young adults, including my own children. I've tried to provide tools to help them successfully communicate and navigate through the turbulent teenage years. I've seen both the success and failure of my efforts. My successes keep me going; my failures keep me trying.

Over the years, I've seen the same issues hurt so many girls so many times that I decided to write down my insights, thoughts, and advice. I hope you enjoy What Your Mother Never Told You.

As mothers, there may be issues you are not comfortable addressing. Perhaps your own teen years bring up unpleasant memories, or you fear being asked questions you don't want to answer.

Fathers, too, risk their daughters' deaf ear when trying to help them prepare for sensitive teen situations. After all, as fathers, how can we fully disclose what goes through the mind of a teenage boy before the conversation becomes awkward and uncomfortable?

What Your Mother Never Told You can have the conversation for you. It provides answers you really want to give to questions your daughters really want to ask. It opens up doors to dialogue between our daughters and us when they are ready to talk. Put a copy by their bedside and another in the family room, and bookmark the chapter you want to discuss. Our daughters are curious and smart; they'll get the message.

Counselors

Your job is difficult. You are on the front lines.

Girls may take your advice but forget it the next time they're in the midst of a sticky situation. What Your Mother Never Told You will help girls remember.

What Your Mother Never Told You can also be used to initiate group discussions, and each Chapter can be used as the daily topic of discussion for any syllabus. For example, you can read the short chapter "The Most Important Word in the Dictionary is No," and then have girls role-play, and watch and listen to each other, saying "No" in situations they create. This is one example of the many ways What Your Mother Never Told You can help make your difficult job a little easier.

Let's be real. We both know that my book is certainly not the answer to every issue facing our teens, but it does create the opportunity to discuss sensitive topics whether or not you/they agree or disagree with the message or the approach! The goal is the dialogue that ensues which will teach our teens to problem solve through your discussions. It's a start. It's a tool. It's what You make of it. After all, you are the counselors for teens.

About the Book

What Your Mother Never Told You was written
to help teenage girls anticipate issues and to provide strategies to address those issues.

Our daughters are vulnerable when they are introduced to the real world without being adequately prepared. They are curious, playful, intelligent, and beautiful. They look and often act much older than their age.

They are getting the wrong kind of attention much earlier than they should. They will find themselves in difficult situations that will test them over and over again. My efforts are focused on helping the girls to grow, to be strong, and to successfully deal with the realities that confront them today.

This book will help our teens better understand the problems surrounding all teenage girls including: parenting (father daughter and mother daughter issues), relationships, dating, change, transitioning to adulthood, and self esteem, all of which will help her take control, problem solve and make more thoughtful decisions when addressing questions that come her way.

Over the years, I've taken the time to listen to teenagers and young adults, and I understand what they say. I've taught them communication skills and common sense strategies that are in this book. I offer them to you in What Your Mother Never Told You.
